Kabi Kabi Aboriginal Housing Corporation and Coast2Bay celebrated the recent opening of Mundai Dja in Maroochydore, marking the completion of a purpose-built housing complex designed specifically for members of the Kabi Kabi Aboriginal Housing Corporation.

The development replaces two aging homes with 18 modern apartments: 6 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom units, all delivered under Queensland’s Long Term Community Housing Program.

Nearly a Decade in the Making

First proposed by Kabi Kabi in 2016, the project faced significant challenges. The breakthrough came in 2023 when the Queensland Government awarded funding through the QuickStarts Round 1 program.

Murphy Builders was appointed as Principal Contractor in February 2024, with practical completion achieved in September 2025. The complex is now fully tenanted.

Design That Stands Out

The building’s architecture maximises natural light and airflow through two connected buildings joined by a central atrium and elevated walkways.

Bold colours and extensive screening, inspired by the surrounding melaleuca woodland, create a striking appearance.

Local artists Nikita Newly and Sara Ingram collaborated on four artistic elements throughout the complex, including signage, a laser-cut screen over a yarning circle, lift carriage prints, and a mosaic table.

A Community Celebration

More than 50 guests attended the Open House event, including The Honourable Fiona Simpson MP, Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, along with representatives from Sunshine Coast Council, Unitywater, and project partners.

Rob McArthur, Director of Kabi Kabi Aboriginal Housing Corporation, thanked the Coast2Bay team for their commitment to walking alongside the team on this important journey.

Coast2Bay served as Development Manager throughout the project, securing approvals, coordinating consultants and contractors, and administering the funding agreement. We’re also pleased to be appointed as Property Manager for the complex.
