Less Stress on the Home Front

Caboolture News, January 6, 2016

Today the Caboolture-Bribie Island branch of the Knights of the Southern Cross, a Catholic Men’s Group is joining with Coast2Bay Housing Group to deal with the modern day reality of extreme housing stress in Caboolture for those on very low incomes.

Twenty nine individuals and family members in accommodation managed by Coast2Bay Housing Group will benefit from gifts totaling $5,000 to directly help with their housing needs. Two families previously living on a caravan site will receive essential furniture for their new home including beds and mattresses for their disabled children. Another family finally able to get long term housing will have their removal costs paid for. Another elderly woman in her mid 70’s will receive financial support. A young couple, facing extreme hardship and expecting a baby in just a few weeks, will have the costs of a driving licence and driving lessons covered to allow the father to get a job and provide for his family in the New Year. Other families have been given debt relief from outstanding repairs to their home that they have been unable to fully meet.

The CEO of Coast2Bay Housing Group Andrew Elvin, explained

“many families face extreme hardship in meeting the cost of sustaining their housing in Caboolture due to their circumstances. For them meeting these costs and navigating past barriers to find a home or keep a home is a real challenge. I am so grateful for the generosity of the local branch of the Knights of the Southern Cross for their foresight in helping tackle the issue of housing affordability and housing stress in Caboolture for those on the lowest incomes”.

Brian Berge Chairman of the Knights of the Southern Cross in Caboolture said

“we hold small fund raising events for the whole year to provide help and support to families in need. Our work is designed to make life in the community more bearable. We thank those who have supported us.  Unfortunately it seems there is still ‘no room’ for many facing housing stress this Christmas, these funds will help to address this. The suggestion to approach Coast2Bay Housing came from Mark Ryan MP and I am delighted we have been able to make a contribution towards supporting those in greatest need through this partnership”.

Coast2Bay Housing Group is currently seeking additional donations for its work to address housing stress in Caboolture and its capital appeal for $100,000 to finalise a $0.65 million project to build a new women’s refuge in 2016 for those escaping domestic and family violence in the region.
