As Cyclone Alfred approaches South-East Queensland, the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted severe weather conditions, including strong winds and flash flooding. The first thing to be conscious of is to remain calm and be well prepared. We urge all residents to take steps to ensure the safety of yourself and your property.
Securing Balcony Items
Move or Secure Loose Items: Move outdoor furniture, plants, and decor indoors or secure them safely. Flying debris can be hazardous.
Check Balconies: Ensure nothing is left unsecured as winds pick up.
Garden and External Areas
Clear Dead Branches and Debris: Remove dead branches or garden waste that could become dangerous in high winds.
Tidy Outdoor Areas: Store garden tools or loose items securely. Avoid putting your council rubbish bins out if there are strong winds.
Flash Flooding and Flood-Prone Areas
Elevate Essential Items: If you live in a flood-prone area, elevate essential items to higher ground to protect them from potential flooding.
Collect Sandbags: If you live in a flood-prone area, obtain sandbags to safeguard your property. SES services may provide sandbags—please visit your local SES centre for more details.
Cyclone Preparedness
Emergency Supplies: Ensure you have essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, a portable phone charger and battery radio to stay up to date with alerts.
Evacuation Plan: Familiarise yourself with local evacuation routes and keep emergency contact numbers, including the SES, accessible.
Stay Informed: Monitor weather warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology and local authorities for updates.
Stay Indoors During the Storm: Remain indoors and avoid using elevators. By ensuring you are prepared with necessary supplies, you will limit the need to travel outside. Do not drive through flooded roads.
In the event of a life-threatening emergency contact 000.
For non-life-threatening flood and storm emergency assistance contact State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500.
